ME/CFS MEDICAL SERVICES

• 1995: North West’s first ME/CFS ‘Group Management Programme’ set up by Stockport NHS for adults living in Stockport, following a two year campaign.

• 1998: with National Lottery funding, SMEG started the UK’s first ME Nurse Domiciliary Service supporting newly diagnosed and severely affected ME patients and their families. We also provided information/training for GP’s, nurses etc. Over six years 900+ patients/carers were helped. patients improvement/recovery rates increased from less than 20% to 70-80%.

• 2004: East Manchester CFS/ME (Adult) Multi Disciplinary Team was established with Department of Health funding and is managed by Stockport PCT. SMEG’s ME nurses and neuro-physiotherapist transferred to form the core of new NHS services for Stockport, Manchester and Oldham PCT areas and a Network Coordinating Centre for Greater Manchester.

• 2005 onwards campaigns have been run to try and persuade Greater Manchester’s Strategic Health Authority and Primary Care Trusts to end the ‘Postcode Lottery’ for specialist ME/CFS services for the 12,000 adults/children with ME in this area.
